Statement by Bertie Ahern, then Taioseach, Condemning the Omagh Bomb, 15 August 1998

Department of the Taoiseach, 15-08-1998, Taoiseach condemns Omagh Bomb

"I have been horrified to learn of the dastardly bomb attack in Omagh, Co Tyrone and of the appalling loss of life and injuries that have resulted.

On behalf of the Irish Government, I utterly condemn this outrage. My heart goes out to all those who have lost loved ones and to those wounded and shocked by this senseless blast.

This is an attack on democracy, a cruel denial of the clearly expressed wish for peace of the overwhelming majority of the Irish people, as shown by the referendums on the Good Friday Agreement.

The Irish Government and security forces will give every assistance to bring those responsible to justice. We will not be found wanting in ensuring that no organisation in our jurisdiction can continue to defy the will of the Irish people. Those who seek to do so will be ruthlessly suppressed."
