Title: | Paratroopers at Magilligan (1) [No.F7P1] |
Description: | On Saturday 22 January 1972, eight days before 'Bloody Sunday' (30 January 1972), the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) organised an anti-Internment protest at Magilligan Internee Camp at Magilligan Strand on the north coast of County Derry. Elements of the British Army's Parachute Regiment were transported from their base in Belfast to deal with the protest. The demostration was broken up by the troops. Organisers of the protest, including John Hume, claimed that soldiers had used excessive violence and some had to be physically restrained by their officers. In this photograph one officer is remonstrating with his troops about their behaviour. A similar arrangement was in operation on Sunday 30 January 1972 with paratroopers being transported from Belfast to Derry to deal with the planned anti-Interment march. |
