Protest rally at OSF premises [No.F4P43] |
Description: |
Approximately 250 women in Derry marched to a premises used by Official Sinn Féin (OSF) in Meenan Square, Lecky Road, Derry on the afternoon of 22 May 1972. They had gathered to protest at the shooting of William Best, who was a soldier in the British Army, by the Official Irish Republican Army (OIRA) on 21 May 1972. Best was originally from Derry and had been serving in the Royal Irish Rangers in Germany. He had returned home on leave to visit friends when he was picked up by the OIRA. There were reports of an angry confrontation between the women and Republican representatives at the premises (see: The Irish Times, 23 May 1972; page 1). |
