Title: | IRA training session (1) [No.F3P1] |
Description: | A group of Irish Republican Army (IRA) members preparing to take part in target practice for the benefit of a foreign camera crew. At this time there were a series of 'no-go' areas in Northern Ireland where the security services were unable to operate normally. In Derry these areas consisted mainly of the Bogside and the Creggan and were referred to as 'Free Derry'. Within the 'no-go' areas the IRA was able to train and patrol openly. The photograph (and the following ones) show the IRA using an assortment of old weapons. Later in the conflict the IRA was able to obtain supplies of modern firearms. |
