Title: | Stop and Search (1) [F2P19] |
Description: | A member of the public is stopped and searched on the streets of Derry. In addition to the body search the man would have been questioned about: his name; date of birth; place of residence; where he was coming from before being stopped; where he was going to next; and the purpose of his visit. This scene was a routine one in Catholic areas of Northern Ireland with most males being stopped and many females as well. The security forces argued that it was an important part of the security arrangements. However many Catholics viewed it as harassment especially when it was not uncommon to be stopped several times in the space of a few hundred yards, or to be stopped several times a day by the same soldiers at a permanent checkpoint. |
