Part 1: The Cause of Poverty
Description: |
(Introductory) Introduced by Peter Kelly and using historians, contemporary writings of social and political commentators describe the horrific levels of poverty and suffering in Ireland before the famine and during it. (Part 1) Deals with the levels of poverty before the famine, the English attitude to Ireland and the penal laws, also the writings of visitors and the politics of the time profiled. Agriculture was the dominant exmployer without access to land even a small piece, a family was in trouble, but competition meant tenants at whims of their landlords, the degree of this is explained by writings of Arthur Young 1780, speeches in Commons, writing in 1847, visitor James Hack Tuke, with Professor William Smyth, of St Patricks College, Maynooth, comments. Also letters from Ireland in 1848 from Denis Kelly to Henry Packenham-Mahon and from writing of Frenchman, Gustave Beaumont, Ireland Social, Political and Religious. Also writings of W. Lecky on History of Ireland in the 18th Century. Tom Barry a local Cork historian details the injustice around the payment of tithes by Catholics to the Church of Ireland. The programme come in different sections (1) the weight of Landlordism, (2) the export of wealth, (3) a controlled economy and (4) Population Growth. The scene was set for disaster, writings of Arthur Wellesley (Duke of Wellington) even warned of it.

Piece from newspaper reports, three hundred thousand paupers go to Liverpool in 1847 Government schemes send three thousand Irish women to Australia as women were in short supply. British also (spring 1847) considered one and half million Catholics to Canada to set up Catholic Colony. Bishop of Derry, Dr Maginn's comments on this scheme are quoted, in anger, clergy however undecided on emigration. Kelly explains. Landlord schemes based on fact keeping a pauper in the workhouse cost twice what it cost to send him to Canada. Lord Palmerston, British Foreign Secretary condemning him. Nationalist Ireland opposed emigration, it wanted reasons for it changed. 1848 letters from America praise the results of going to America, offers Irish network and information and money.
