Who Bombed Birmingham?
Description:
This is a drama reconstruction of the events from 21 November 1974. The funeral of IRA bomber James McDaid, the Birmingham pub bomb which killed twenty-one people and the arrest, interrogation and conviction of the six men who innocent of the crime became known as the Birmingham six. Its written by Bob Ritchie, and explores the role of Chris Mullen (Labour MP), TV producers Charles Trevelyn and Ian McBride who were behind the 1985 World in Action TV programme which promoted the innocence of the six men, and began increasing efforts to have them released. The programme reconstructs Dr Skues forensic tests, the beating of the prisoners, in Morecombe Police Station, the later refusal of most police officers to talk to the programme makers, the programme pieces together the discrediting of the forensic evidence and brining out the role of police and wardens in beating out the confessions from the men. Meanwhile Chris Mullen (MP) tours Ireland trying to get some information from Republicans on who did carry out the attack. Clip of the World in Action programme shown. Chris Mullen efforts eventually reveal the names of the men who did the bombings. Meanwhile Skuse (scientist) forced to take early retirement raises doubts about his reliability, Midland's Police interview Mullin, on the identities he knew, forced to do so by the Mellor (British Home Secretary) then a former policeman comes forward with an account of the beating of the prisoners and of them being threatened with a shotgun. On 22 June 1987 in Commons government referees case to Court of Appeal, at this time Devon and Cornwall police begin new inquiries. It begins with John Grey (UDA) talking about Gerry Adams, and how he became involved in the UDA, then Billy McCaughey (Ex-RUC) tells why he killed a Catholic shop keeper in Co.Antrim, then Billy Giles who killed a Catholic man in Newtownards (this man later commits suicide). Then from the Republican prisioners (two hundred and sixty of them) Eamon McDermott comments on how he passes his time reading, then Eugene McCormick recalls how he came in for killing a RUC man, he rejects common criminal view of his victim. Back to Billy Giles who calls his victim an identified Republican. Maze has one thousand and two hundred guards, one calls his prisoners out and out terrorists. Twelve have committed suicides, and eight killed by the IRA, John Greig (UDA) comments on his views of guards. Unidentified guard tells of this attitude to prisoners, whose OCs run the wings, Raymond McCartney (IRA OC) in since 1977 for killing an industralist and a policeman, his wife is dubbed out, and an actors voice used, also during a dialogure from the OC meetings with prisoner chiefs.
