The O'Doherty family from Derry are profiled, by Peter Taylor in this documentary Shane O'Doherty became an IRA bomber, he recalls his early life and beliefs. Why he joined the IRA and his career in the IRA. His brothers Murdoch, Bernard (in the USA), Eamon, give their recollections of growing up in Derry during troubled times, they all critise their brother Shane IRA membership and bombing campaign. Programme has contemporary film clips of IRA men on streets of Derry, and rioting in Derry, Shane O'Doherty recalls various incidents including Eamon Lafferty (19) being shot dead in 1971, he was O'Doherty friend. Film of Bloody Sunday, O'Doherty was there and recalls visiting the morgue looking for his friend, Peter Taylor states of importance of Bloody Sunday in the mind of Republicans and Nationalism. By the time his father died he was on the run, and disguised when at the funeral, O'Doherty recalls his bomb making in Derry. His brothers all recall meeting him at rare events. In 1973 the IRA bombed Old Bailey, London, the next wave was letter bombs, O'Doherty was behind this, he calls, with contemporary film clips, and Michael O'Cock (Brig.) recalls getting a letter bomb. Eventually Shane was arrested at a time of ceasefire, the IRA shot Paul Gray (RUC) in Derry in retaliation, Loyalists meanwhile threatened his brother. Shane's trial included Baker Street underground bomb, his family express their shock and horror. His mother recalls the five hundred mile trip to visit him in London prison. By 1978 after long reflection and reading O'Doherty had been converted from violence, he apologised to his victims, they weren't impressed. By 1980s he was transferred to Maze, then Maghaberry. His brothers give their views of things now, all the brothers have since left N.Ireland. O'Doherty says he done disservice to the ideals he followed. | ||
