Description: |
Bernadette Devlin's documentary on twenty years of Republican struggle in Northern Ireland, from 1968-1988. Made by the '1968 committee' and narrated by Bernadette Devlin (McAliskey) this pro-Republican, independently made documentary details the twenty years of struggle since 1968. It begins with Michael Farrell setting the scene in 1968, Devlin narrates the housing situation that sparked events. Caledon recalled by Annie Gildernew with stills of contemporary newspaper clips. As the CRA grew and marches followed, B.Devlin gives a Republican slant to all the major events of these early days, including her own election, the last united action by the CRA. In August 1969 Tommy Gorman details RUC action in Divis Street, Belfast, and the IRA's role growing in Republican areas. In 1970 the SDLP formed breaking political unity of CRA, into SDLP and Sinn Fein. 1971 internment introduced, contemporary film clips, this re-united CRA behind rent and rates strikes. In 1972 Bloody Sunday ended the defensive attitude of CRA, the national issue took precedent now over social issues. Mary Nellis comments. 1972-1976 saw the CRA movement fragment further, it wasn't until H-Blocks and Hunger Strike then Devlin reckons the Nationalists people re-united again, behind H-Blocks committees, B.Devlin lists those killed by Loyalists, only she survived. She lists the reasons behind the Anglo-Irish agreement as she sees it, and believes the unemployment, poor housing, still exists due to British presence. Oliver Kearney of FEA gives his views. Film includes Gerry Adams address to 1988 CRA commemoration meeting. | ||
