Programme explains penalties for IRA men who break. But although the IRA has executed six men the RUC say these men are innocent. Seamus Morgan from Dungannon's case is profiled. He was shot by IRA as an informer. Last July when J. O'Donnell's funeral was raided, Dermot Perry's execution was postponed as RUC burst in and saved him, then RUC say this case highlights ruthlessness of IRA attacks on innocent men as Perry refused to give evidence in court. Statistics on charges shown. Dermot Walsh of Queen's University, Belfast gives his analysis of charges brought in Diplock Courts compared to much higher rates of arrest. He says the RUC are on intelligence gathering operations which are legal, as judges support says you can be arrested without suspicion. The RUC say war weariness has helped them, statistics of charges shown with nine informers responsible, Christopher Black responsible for forty two arrests, his case profiled with a breakdown of IRA structure changes into cells, and how Blacks evidence broke these cells down. Other informers James O'Rawe, Jack Goodman, Pat McGurk highlighted. In January Kevin McGrady offered himself to RUC after religious conversion. Jim Gibney and Francis McConkey were charged with Ernie Dowd's killing in Belfast. Background explained but twenty four INLA men ended up on charges, Sean O'Hara interview explains Robert McAllister's evidence against him, in which McAllister confronts him, then withdraws evidence. O'Hara explains RUC offers of money. Other grasses Jack Goodman and Jack Grimley's involvement explained. Why however are informers prepared to give evidence in courts? Is it the RUC's money offers? War-weariness? Immunity? The RUC won't comment. Solicitor Pat McCrory explains the courts attitude to informers evidence in previous cases and the history of granting immunity to suspects in Northern Ireland. Roisin McAuley concludes that informers have damaged the IRA and badly hurt the INLA. | ||
