Facts and figures given. The reformation spread over Europe including England. Professor J. Plumb (Cambridge University) explains Ireland importance strategically. Tudors,Henry VIII and Elizabeth I want to crush Gaelic Ireland. Map used to explain the spreading of the 'Pale' but Ulster was still Gaelic and rebellious, Ulstermen defeated and in 1607 the Flight of the Earls led to Plantation of Ulster by Loyalist Protestant from England and Scotland. Professor explains. New settlers influences discussed everything about them was different. A.T.Q. Stewart (Queens University, Belfast) explains, they were mostly Anglicans and Presbyterians. Attacks in 1641 on settlers raised rumours of 'murderous Papists' exerts from writings of time in England, Dr. Stewart (QUB) explains atmosphere created of seige. In Drogheda and Wexford Catholic civilians were slaughtered, clip from Cromwell's writings explains, Irish people today still remember Cromwell, many recall 'to hell or Connaught'. When James II suceeded Cromwell, Irish Catholics hoped to get their land back and roll back plantation, but in England, William III of Holland forced James out, he arrived in Ireland and in 1689 led Seige to Derry for fifteen weeks. ON July 1st 1690 William defeats James at the Boyne River, Ireland's future is settled for future with Protestant triumph and ascendancy. Significance today explained by Dr Stewart. Orange marchers today are a reminder to Catholics today of their defeat three hundred years ago. Protestants introduced Penal Laws against Catholics and Presbyterians, no voting, no holding office, no priests allowed, no land owning, no inheritance. Every decade has seen sectarian riots since 1886. 6th February, 1911, King George I opens Parliament but Asquith needed Irish MP's to gain power, then price was Home Rule, but in Ulster the Orange Order mobilised fifty thousand men for Lord E. Carsons anti-home rule cause. Conservative Bannar Law suuported Carson, including use of violence. Dr. C. Townend (Keele University) explains with film clips of the time, then Indian Summer of the British Empire. September 1912 Belfast, Loyalists led by Carson sign a covenant to stay British, people remember signing some with blood. In 1912 the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) formed. Dr. Stewart explains film of UVF drilling. In the South Nationalists believed UVF was a bluff, Galway Professor explains. Prime Minister Asquith tried to get a solution, both sides build up forces but British Officer at the Curragh threatened to resign. Dr Townsend explains the effect of this and arrival of UVF guns in Larne in April 1914. Dr Stewart summarises Carson and Craig's plans with Galway Professor giving Southern view, where the Irish Volunteers hand landed fifteen hundred rifles but European War probably prevented civil war, now Carson offered UVF to fight for Britain. Dr. Stewart explains Unionists fears. By 1916 WWI was deadlocked. Film of Somme Battle and role of thirty sixth Division (UVF), old soldiers recall battles effects with film clips. At Easter 1916, Pearce's revolt lasts six days, three thousand five hundred arrested. Dublin civilians were hostile, men recalls being spat on. Four hundred killed, two thousand, five hundred injured. Dublin Centre ruined. Executions begin on May 3rd. Dubliners recall the cities changing atmosphere as executions continue. Easter rebels had become martyrs. By 1917 internees released by Britain, Dublin welcomes them in joy, people recall with old film clips. Sinn Fein (SF) began to win by-elections, when British wanted to bring conscription to Ireland, most Nationalists opinion was with Sinn Fein against it. People recall. In general election of 1918 Sinn Fein won seventy eight seats in Ireland and set up their own Irish Parliament (the Dail). Dr. Stewart explains. Dail Eireann meets and declares Irish Republic. Opening scenes of derelict Belfast with commenting on National aspirations of Northern Ireland's two communities. Fifteen years ago Protestants ascendancy seemed secure but events would lead to a Catholic rebellion. In July 1966 British Queen Elizabeth II visited Northern Ireland it reassured Protestant Unionists of their British link, at an Orange demonstration Unionist PM speaks on his role to maintain this link. Film of Orange march, and the Protestant RUC and B Specials drilling. The Special Powers Act provided legal back-up to any means of repression thought fit, economics were however shaky and when T.O'Neill meet the Sean Lemass (southern government) and Presbyterians discussed ecumenism, Protestant Unionist felt endangered. Paisley led march through Catholic markets area. Film clip. In 1966 Unionist celebrated the battle of the somme. Catholics, the Easter Rising in 1916 in Dublin. As the UVF murdered two Catholics, O'Neill spoke on the dangers of violence. Film of Paisley sermon condemning O'Neill and liberals. Within then Unionist disquiet grew about O'Neill's social reforms. Chichester Clark gives interview on subject. Paisley articulates Protestant fears in Orange demonstration speech, but Northern Ireland's Catholic's were disadvantaged, commentary explains discrimination used and political gerrymandering. Then Fintona housing scandal drew attention to the housing discrimination. Austin Currie (Nationalist MP) gives interview, then Civil Rights Association (CRA) was formed and began marching for reforms. Film of 5th October 1968 CRA march in Derry being attacked by RUC, showed the world the situatio have and increased the CRA's profile amongst Nationalists as a way to get change. In Belfast in November 1968 students stopped by Paisley demonstration. Film clip of Paisley speech. Student sit down protest cleared by RUC. T.O'Neill goes on TV to appeal for calm, but he looked weak to Protestants. In November 1968 a CRA march in Derry is addressed by Ivan Cooper. Film of his speech, on 6th December 1968 another Unionist crisis meeting. The People's Democracy, comprised mainly of university students, held a march from Belfast to Derry over 4 days beginning on 1st January 1969. At Burntollet, outside of Derry, the march was blocked by Loyalists, student leader explains his view. On 4th day at Burntollet, RUC D.I. Hood warns students of waiting Loyalists. Film clip shows the many attackers, some of whom were believed to be off-duty, 'B-Specials' (reserve police - Ulster Special Constabulary). Student made it to Derry but polarisation in Northern Ireland increased, in Derry that night, then RUC went on a sectarian rampage in the Catholic Bogside. On 11th January 1969 a CIRA March is blocked in Newry. Kevin Boyle addresses CRA crowd. RUC man says no more marching will be allowed on their route, student anger grows. Film clip of attacks on RUC roadblock, violence at a CRA for the first time. Paisley's reaction was to stand for election in a speech he announces this prospect. Film of Paisley demonstration in Belfast. In March and April the UVF bombed water installations, O'Neill got the blame. On 25th April 1969 he resigned. Film of his speech on his aims. Unionists elected Major James Chichester-Clark. Film clip. On 8th August 1969 he meets J. Callaghan (British Home Secretary) who wants Orange marches banned, but Apprentice boys march in Derry goes ahead. Film clip. In Catholic Bogside in Derry barricades built to keep out RUC. Film clip of John Hume pleading peace and RUC men throwing stones. Film of escalating rioting and injured plus Bernadette Devlin (MP) interview on anti-RUC statement. RUC attacks on Bogside barricades had become major battle. Film clip of RUC in retreat. Petrol bombs and CS gas used. Chichester Clark (Prime Minister) gives TV statement, he bring in eight thousand five hundred B. Specials, this further inflames situation. Film clip of Derry youths preparing petrol bombs. By afternoon British Troops called in, riots spread to Belfast where Protestant (MISSING) killed eight Catholics, fifteen hundred Catholic and three hundred and fifty Protestant families left their homes. On August 15th 1969 troops arrive back in Belfast. Civil war had been averted. Film clip. From now on the British Government was linked to Northern Ireland's future. Catholic civilians and troops enjoyed a honeymoon period. I. Freeland (British General) comments. On 27th August 1969, James Callaghan visits Derry. In Belfast, then army was to build a peace line, film of John McKeague on Loyalist side dismantling barricade but the army saw the subtitles of Belfast's sectarian geography. Film clip of General Ian Freeland talking to locals and bemused British soldier getting lecture from local. On August 22nd 1969 the B. Specials had to surrender their arms. Paisley speech voices Protestant fears. On the Shankill, Protestants riot and shoot at the army. Film report of gun battle in which one RUC man and two civilans were killed and sixty six injured. Army forced on with arms searches in both Protestant and Catholic areas. The Provisional IRA had formed, a riot in Ballymurphy estate in Belfast. Film. By 1970 the PIRA bombed city centres in economic targetting. Fim reports on damage. June 1970, Unionist Prime Minister allows Orange Marches. Film of parade in East Belfast passing Catholic area. Rioting spreads across Belfast. Film reports. Reg Maudling (British Home Secretary) arrives in Northern Ireland and introduces stricter coersion. On 4th July 1970 the army begins thirty six hour curfew in lower falls Catholic area, one hundred guns found, but civilian life badly disrupted. Film interview with housewifes and clash between locals, a Catholic priest and British troops. On 3rd February 1971 the same searches caused violence in Clonard area. Film report of angry woman insulting British troops. Catholic disaffection complete. At Stormont in 1971 Protestants demand internment of Republicans, British refused at this time, and J. Chichester-Clark (Prime Minister) resigned to be followed by Brian Faulkner. Film clip of his interview on firm law and order policy. But in Derry the British shot dead two civilian rioters. Film clip of intense attacks on troops, then PIRA killed six and used two hundred and twenty bombs in six months, Faulkner now got internment, on August 8th 1971 the army swooped solely on Republicans. Film of riots and Faulkner press conference. Then Catholic backlash was furious. Film of burnt buildings and province wide violence in which twenty two died. In Ardoyne Protestants left and burnt their homes to prevent Catholics getting into them, two hundred houses gutted, seven thousand refugees, fifteen hundred people interned but 75% released by end of year. Joe Cahill (PIRA Chief) gives Belfast interview on minor loses. Army gives views on efforts of internment. Ill-treatment of internees proved in European Courts. Nationalists begin rent and rates strike and set up separate assembly in Dungiven. Film of John Humes address, then bomb blast in Belfast centre, forty one soldiers, sixty six civilians killed, many injured, in next four months. Film of car bomb blast and explosion injuring firemen in Belfast. On 6th September 1971 Paisley addresses Loyalist rally with threats to Ireland. Hume, Curries and Devlin's on 22nd January 1972 CRA marchers including John Hume are stopped by Army/RUC at Magilligan Strand, Co. Derry. Film clip of John Hume's discussion with British Officer. One week later on 30th January 1972 another CRA march from the Bogside into Derry City is stopped by the army, then rioting erupts and as British Paratroopers enter the Bogside, thirteen civilians shot dead, thirteen injured. This became known as Bloody Sunday. Film of unfolding events, includes initial riot, Paratroopers going in and pictures of local priest, Fr. Ed. Daly with white handkerchief, escorting dead and injured civilians to ambulances. Interview with Fr. E. Daly on what he witnessed then Lt. Col. Derek Wilford on the British Army's point of view, he claims to have hit three gunmen and has no worries about the operation. Then Widgery Inquiry conclusion differs with Derry coroner who called it 'unadulterated murder', all the dead were shot in the back. In 1979 torture methods admitted by state in prisons political status recognised this, but from April 1976 this was removed. Film of Lord Londonderry Garden party, the Unionist leadership in attendance. New election system, proportional representation was to give Catholics proper representation now one third of Council give allegation to Southern Government. Glen Barr on Unionist fears they would have to be controlled. M. Farrell gives Nationalist view on Unionist Government, following eighteen dead in Derry riots, sectarian violence against Catholics in Belfast. Catholic survivors recall RUC murder gang, including killing of five McMahon's in Belfast. Between 1920-1922, four hundred and fifty killed, two thirds were Catholics, ten thousand Catholics lost their jobs, five hundred Catholic businesses wrecked. Glen Barr gives Protestant views of Pograms. M. Farrell says Pogram tolerated by Unionist Government and participated in by RUC, the B. Specials an entirely Protestant auxilary force formed, with Special powers get to allow Police powers to do anything. Glen Barr comments, rebuffed by M. Farrell, Nationalists had no legal road to change. Omagh September 1924 Unionists demonstration, film now PR elections abolished. Twenty five Catholic Councils reduced to two. Lord Craigavon, film on British connection. In 1920s politics parochial, but in slums of Belfast depression of 1930s hit hard. Civilians recall working conditions and poor health of children and disease (TB) in workplaces. No progress in housing or sanitation, shipbulding in trouble in 1931, one in four unemployed. Indignant hunger marches began, civilians recall sight, Unionists bring police into Belfast as briefly Protestant and Catholic poor riot together in 1932. Movie tone camera film. Marchers recall ramage. Old film clips. Catholic church called rioters communist and Unionist called Catholics Republican troublemakers. Glen Barr explains movement division effects. Craigavon speech 'a Protestant Government for a Protestant People' Basil Brooke attack Catholics, Orange leader says 'Protestants should employ Protestants. More sectarian riots occurred in Belfast, civilians recall fighting. Government called in British army to restore peace. Film clip, eleven killed and five hundred homes destroyed. M. Farrell comments on 1935 pogrom and now Catholics felt outsider in their own country. Funeral of Lord Carson film clip. In 1939 WWII, Craigavon enters war. 1941 film of German raid on Belfast, survivors recall devastation, one thousand killed, fifty thousand homes wrecked. In 1943 US troops arrive, film of 1945 German U-boats surrender, Churchill praises Northern Ireland. 1953 Elizabeth II arrives in Northern Ireland. The South of Ireland declares itself a Republic, Ireland Act of 1949 passed comments, Northern Ireland to Britain but segregration everywhere, commntator explains, civilians tell about segregation, including Bernadette Devlin. Segregration was also in Education, then communities had two different culture zones, the Orange Order permeated the Protestant community. M. Farrell explains Catholics objections to intergrated education, then Glen Barr view. Film of Northern Ireland School Children whose indoctrinization assured the voting pattern. M. Farrell on Catholics in 1955 voting for Sinn Fein men as IRA had revived it's military campaign in 1956. Film of attacks but although nineteen people killed it failed, Glenn Barr comments. In the RUC one in nine was Catholics all armed. Film clip of B. Specials getting arms, former Specials recall motives in interviews. National civilians give their feelings towards RUC. In 1932 Stormont opened the civil service was also totally Protestant, thirty six Catholics out of five hundred posts. Discrimination against Catholics was widespread, G. Barr defends discrimination. M. Farrell on entrenched discrimination, example of Fermanagh bus drivers. Film of Fintona 1953 poor housing for Catholics, while forty eight new houses built for Protestants. G.
