Film of Bogside, Derry, in August 1969, law and order collapses in Northern Ireland Catholics had finally rebelled against state that rejected them. Film of burning Catholic homes in Belfast, eight killed, Catholics flee, one thousand and five hundred Catholics and three hundred Protestants homes destroyed. Army restores peace. Film clip of welcoming civilians. General I. Freeland view. James Callaghan (British Home Secretary) James Callaghan visits Northern Ireland on August 1969, John Hume greets Callaghan. Film clip. B. Specials to be phased out, Callaghan says he's on side of justice and freedom. Army faces barricade problem, a peace line to be built. John McKeague view from Loyalist side. Dover Street shows army's problem with sectarian geography in Belfast. August 22nd 1969 B Specials weapons called in. Film clip includes Ian Paisley's views, Protestant riot on Shankill Road, Belfast film of gunfire at army, three civilians and an RUC man shot dead, army searches for arms. In Catholic areas, British army searches cause resentment. By April 1970, then Provisional IRA had formed. Film of his speech. Then in Derry British shoot dead, two Catholic youths, film clip of rioting, soldiers retreat under hall of stones. IRA now killing British Soldiers. On 9th August 1971 internment raids begin. Film of raids and riots and Faulkner press conference. Street riots and violence increases. Film clips. Twenty two killed in four days. Protestants burn their own Ardoyne homes to stop Catholics getting them. Film of 7,000 refugees. Film of army searching civilian, internment failed. Joe Cahill gives news conference. Army views on internment given. Catholic alienation from British complete, torture claims proved, rent and rates strike begins. Nationalists set up government at Dungiven. John Hume addresses it. Film of Provisional bombings, forty one British, sixty six civilians killed in four months, car bomb blast film. Then explosion during news report injures firemen. On September 6th 1971 at rally. Paisley addresses Loyalists threatening Nationalist Ireland. On January 22nd 1972 at Magilligan Strand the British shoot rubber bullets at anti-internment demonstration. Film report with John Hume arguing with British Officer. One week later on 30th January, a Civilian Rights March in Derry is attacked by British Paratroopers. Film report on Bloody Sunday includes wounded man being removed by Catholic Bishop E. Daly waving white cloth and dead bodies on street. Fr. (now bishop) Ed. Daly comments, then Derek Wilford (Para/Colonel), thirteen Catholic men dead, thirteen more wounded. Widgery Inquiry conclusions quoted but Derry coroner differed. In days following in Britain, Ireland and the USA criticism of Britain followed. Film of funerals in Derry. Paratroopers Headquarters in England bombed. Seven killed. End of documentary from tape nine, begins with questioning of post Bloody Sunday British policy in Ireland, across the world. Film of funerals in Derry. At Aldershot in England, a bomb at the Paratroopers Headquarters killed seven people. IRA operations in Northern Ireland escalated. Film of bombings. Loyalist Ulster Vanguard backed by UDA led by William Craig demands tough Government action. Film of Craig speech and UDA marching. Then British decided not to let things drift. Faulkner refuses to let British Government remove security portfolio. Film clip of his resignation. Stormont is dissolved. Fifty years of Unionist Government ends. Protestants see IRA violence as winning and demonstrations begin. One hundred and ninety thousand Protestants stage protests.
