The exit and entry to the satellite camps were considered a dangerous part of the patrol. The camp guards, operations staff and patrols had to synchronize with each other so as not to leave the troops too long in the 'killing zone'. These satellite camps usually housed a company of soldiers; complete with vehicles, administration staff and equipment. The camps constantly needed to be updated and modified to keep ahead of the threat, hence the corrugated sheets you see that are for mortar and sniper protection. (Paul Crispin) |
