Government Agencies

Northern Ireland Statisitcs and Research Agency (NISRA)

Many of the research and statistical staff that work in the Central Community Relations Unit (CCRU) are seconded from the NISRA.

The Northern Ireland Statisitcs and Research Agency aims to:

  • provide government in Northern Ireland with a statistical and research service to support the formulation, monitoring and evaluation of social and economic policies
  • inform debate in Parliament and the wider community about social and economic issues
  • register key life events for members of the population

The Community Relations Council (CRC)

The Community Relations Council (CRC) is wholely funded by the Central Community Relations Unit (CCRU). The CRC have published a range of reports and other publications.

The Community Relations Council was set up in 1990 as an independent charity to promote better community relations and the recognition of cultural diversity in Northern Ireland. The Council has no view on what form a political solution should take in Northern Ireland but regards the development of tolerance and mutual understanding within the community as a fundamental part of the process.

The Council seeks to influence people at all levels, from working class estates to the executive boardrooms. Much constructive work is already being done by groups and individuals and the Council supports and encourages this. But the debate about community relations and cultural diversity needs to be widened and developed and in this the Council hopes to involve the entire community.

The Cultural Diversity Programme

One of the main programmes of the CRC is the Cultural Diversity Programme. This initiative was first established as the Cultural Traditions Group in 1988 and was subsequently reconstituted in 1990 as a sub-committee of the N.I. Community Relations Council. The work of the programme involves initiating cultural diversity projects, providing resources for such projects, funding local cultural traditions events, supporting research, advising government and establishing contacts with other organisations in the field.
