Bloody Sunday

The event of January 30th 1972 is too well documented elsewhere on this site to require elaboration here. A belated inquiry initiated by Prime Minister Tony Blair into the pogrom is currently in progress at the Guildhall in Derry.
Our painting strives to be iconographical in view of the fact that no painting could possibly convey the full horror of the scene with anything approaching reality. We simply show fourteen coffins stretching into the distance as if forever. The colour red need hardly be explained. For all its stark simplicity or indeed, because of it, this image moves people profoundly which is all any painting of this type can ever hope to do.
