The Surveys
James Russell retained the completed questionnaires / survey forms from three surveys of school children conducted by him in the 1970s. Pre-Pilot and Pilot Surveys were carried out before all three surveys.
Survey of school children on the topic of Civic Education
Secondary School Survey; 1971; [n=1,932]
Primary School Survey; 1972; [n=1,112]
Survey of school children on the topic of Vandalism in Greater Craigavon
Secondary School Survey; 1975; [n=1,088]
James Russell, with the support of the Centre for Environmental Studies under David Donnisson, was able to negotiate entrance to the Schools of Greater Craigavon to carry out a survey on the topic of Vandalism. The aims of the third Northern Ireland schoolboy survey [1975] were to:
- gather self-reported information about the nature and frequency of acts of defacement and destruction of housing and neighbourhood facilities;
- examine the motivations leading to such destruction; and
- investigate background factors which may be important in predicting destructive attitudes and behaviour.
Two pilot studies [1974] were used to collect a list of destructive acts without suggesting that they were carried out by the schoolboys concerned.
The Final survey [N=1,088] was conducted among all the third and fifth year secondary schoolboys present at schools on the days of interviews in the Greater Craigavon area of Northern Ireland [Lurgan, Brownlow and Portadown]. In these the schoolboys were asked to mention which, if any, of these destructive acts they were engaged in. As promised, all the finished questionnaires were mixed before the class, tied in a bundle and taken away without anyone in the school seeing them.
About fifty acts of destruction and defacement were mentioned by the schoolboys. The survey methods used preserved the anonymity of the youths concerned.
The results of the above surveys can now be found on ARK's Surveys Online.
