Introduction to Posters
Posters (823 examples)
Posters are an excellent method of getting ideas and information broadcast as quickly as possible, particularly for communities that do not have access to other media sources.
The early civil rights posters were of the 'typographic' variety, which was a very common advertising format used throughout Ireland in the fifties and sixties. A great number of posters were produced in Derry during the 'Battle of the Bogside' which were very heavily influenced by the posters produced by the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Paris during the 1968 riots.
As printing technology became cheaper there was a move away from the silkscreen posters towards the use of photographic techniques. One poster in particular (the French example No 273) is of such an outstanding quality of finish that it could almost be taken for an official poster produced by the Irish Tourist Board.
The vast majority of the posters in the collection are nationalist in sympathy with only 12 Loyalist examples.
