Introduction to Postcards
Postcards (912 examples)
Postcards are cheeky. They were the first things I collected as I thought it amusing to send mildly political images through the post and have them arrive in England. From the early 1970s onwards postcards became more overtly political to the point where I would not have dared to send them, as the recipient would have been arrested. I then learned there was a huge history behind them. Images from the 1970s and 1980s were copying those of the 1910s and 1920s. It was an even older tradition than this going back to the nineteenth century
Covering most of the 20th Century with examples covering the Home Rule crisis (40 examples), the 1916 rebellion (194 examples), the hunger strike (46 examples). There are also a number of examples of postcards issued by political parties at times of election.
