Belfast, Northern Ireland. 1986
Soldiers would stick white pads on the butts of their rifles (SLR) so they could jot down any relevant information given to them at the intelligence brief before they went out on patrol. This information could be car registration numbers, suspected terrorists, or call signs. Also note that the cocking handle of the SLR was always flipped out should the weapon need loading in a hurry. Believe me, the nanosecond makes a difference. (Paul Crispin)
