Belfast, Northern Ireland. 1986
"Poverty is a noose that strangles humility and breeds disrespect for God and man"
- American Indian Proverb, Sioux.
This photograph was taken in the Divis Flats - thankfully pulled down now - one of the most deprived areas of Belfast and a breeding ground for future terrorists. I took the photograph just after I had finished searching a flat and was taking a break from the stench of fouled nappies and human dirt. I suddenly realised that we had no 'resident' backup and heard footsteps coming up the stairs. Luckily it was a section of soldiers sent to assist. He was relived as well when I exchanged my 9mm for my trusty Nikon F1. (Paul Crispin)
