Belfast, Northern Ireland. 1986
The 'Red Hand of Ulster' in the middle of this mural, and in most of the murals, is predominantly a Loyalist symbol but is also used by Republicans as well. One of the only symbols used by both factions. Legend has it that two chieftains were racing across the water to claim the land. In a bid to lay first claim, one of the chieftains chopped off his right hand and threw it ashore. Not the most peaceful way to start a nation. (Paul Crispin)
