Description: | This project set out to examine divided societies which have a limited level of violence. It was based on a close study of the Northern Irish conflict and its second phase examined controls in other ethnic conflict fields. Initial findings suggest a range of military, paramilitary, social and infrastructural controls in Northern Ireland. The main problems encountered have been determining criteria by which other conflicts might be selected, and finding sufficient time to carry out such comparisons. |

Description: | This project began with the realisation that the Protestant and Catholic communities in Northern Ireland are frequently depicted as two monolithic, opposing blocs. This high degree of typecasting fails to take seriously enough the real complexities of the two communities. The project involved an in-depth investigation of the "two traditions"; only in this way could the cultural diversity that actually exists in Northern Ireland be more fully appreciated. |

Description: | The project aimed to situate music-making in a broad social, cultural and political context in Northern Ireland, looking in particular at rural South Down. It investigated the means by which music is used as a marker of identity, and the ways in which musicians dispute or negotiate conventional ethnic or sectarian tags. It also focused on the various and shifting ways in which professional and amateur musicians and their audiences define and use notions of "tradition" and "community". |
