Description: The Somme Heritage Centre at Newtownards interprets and promotes the Irish contribution to the First World War in general, and the Battle of the Somme in particular. Through interactive displays and presentations the visitor examines life in the trenches of the western front and views a representation of the Somme battlefield. By promoting the common service of soldiers from Ireland in the mainly Unionist 36th (Ulster) Division and mainly Nationalist 16th (Irish) Division, the Centre hopes to encourage cross-community contact and an appreciation of both cultural diversity and areas of common heritage between the two traditions in Northern Ireland.
PSEPII funding was received by the Centre for two years to help
with the Centre's running costs and the salary of it's Director.
