Map Set 22: Deaths Outside Northern Ireland - Introduction

Maps - Location of deaths related to the Northern Ireland conflict, in England, Europe, and the Republic of Ireland (4 maps)

image of map The Sutton Index of Deaths records 258 deaths that occurred outside of Northern Ireland. Of these 115 happened in the Republic of Ireland, 125 occurred in England and 18 were in mainland Europe. These locations had never previously been mapped. This set of 4 maps plots the locations of deaths related to the conflict in London, England, Europe, and the Republic of Ireland. The information used to name, locate and plot each victim is provided by Malcolm Sutton’s 'Index of Deaths 1969-2001'.

The Shapefiles for London, England, Republic of Ireland and mainland Europe were downloaded from the European Environment Agency.

Deaths Outside Northern Ireland: Commentary - Martin Melaugh

The majority of the deaths from the conflict occurred within Northern Ireland. This is reflected in the fact that most of the mapping provided as part of the Visualising the Conflict project relates to Northern Ireland. Nevertheless, significant numbers of deaths happened in the Republic of Ireland (115), England (125), and mainland Europe (18).

The first maps demonstrates that most of the deaths in the Republic of Ireland occurred around the border with Northern Ireland and also in Dublin.

In England, while there were a number of incidents outside of London as shown on the map, most of the deaths occurred within London. Another map is provided which covers London, to illustrate the spread of deaths across the greater London area. In case any user is wondering why there were no deaths in Wales or Scotland, this was because of a deliberate policy on behalf of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) not to engage in attacks in those two countries.

The map for Europe shows that most of the deaths occurred in Germany. These were attacks carried out by the IRA on British forces based in that country.

Notes

The GIS maps listed above have been produced as part of the AHRC 'Visualising the Conflict' Project. The maps have been reproduced and made available with the permission of Land & Property Services under Delegated Authority from the Controller of HMSO, © Crown Copyright and database right 2010; Permit Number: 40209.

All maps were prepared by Luke Kelleher, then a Research Associate (GIS) working with CAIN. All maps were sized A4 (approximately). GIS software was used to produce TIFF versions (A4 approx; 300dpi) which are available on request. Three versions of each map have been made available above:

  • PDF versions (A4 approx; 300dpi) are based on original TIFF files.
  • L-JPG versions (1000px700p approx; 72dpi) are low resolution JPEG images.
  • H-JPG versions (A4 approx; 300dpi) are high resolution JPEG images.
