Map Set 19: Deaths in Paramilitary Feuds Maps - Introduction

Maps - Locations of deaths as a result of paramilitary feuds, Belfast (2 maps)

image of map Sutton’s Index of Deaths provides additional information related to the motivation for particular killings. Extracting this information from the description field it was then possible to map those persons killed as a result of (seperate) Republican and Loyalist feuds.

Data is mapped at electoral ward level and is based on the 2001 Northern Ireland Census survey results.  There are 582 electoral wards in Northern Ireland as defined by the Boundary Commission for Northern Ireland in 1995. The electoral ward shapefile was downloaded from EDINA borders website. The religious background data was downloaded from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency. The table used was Table 7S07b Community Background: Religion or Religion Brought Up In.

Deaths in Paramilitary Feuds: Commentary - Martin Melaugh

Another feature of the conflict in Northern Ireland (1969-2001) was the disputes that would occur within a particular organisation, or the feuds that would happen between formerly aligned organisations. Some of the most bitter feuds would occur when a paramilitary organistion split into two rival organisations. This was the case when the Irish Republican Army (IRA) split into the Official IRA and the Provisional IRA. Loyalist paramilitaries have also engaged in feuds resulting in a number of deaths. Loyalist groups have also been the subject of disputes (interal feuds) which have seen members killing each other.

The two maps show, seperately, deaths as a result of Republican and Loyalist feuds and disputs in Belfast. Most of this category of deaths occurred in Belfast.

The maps have been reproduced and made available with the permission of Land & Property Services under Delegated Authority from the Controller of HMSO, © Crown Copyright and database right 2010; Permit Number: 40209.

All maps were prepared by Luke Kelleher, then a Research Associate (GIS) working with CAIN. All maps were sized A4 (approximately). GIS software was used to produce TIFF versions (A4 approx; 300dpi) which are available on request. Three versions of each map have been made available above:

  • PDF versions (A4 approx; 300dpi) are based on original TIFF files.
  • L-JPG versions (1000px700p approx; 72dpi) are low resolution JPEG images.
  • H-JPG versions (A4 approx; 300dpi) are high resolution JPEG images.
