Introduction

This page contains the results from the 18 Northern Ireland constituencies where the 2005 Westminster General Election was contested. 108 people stood for election to the 18 Westminster seats.  Voting in the election was by the 'first past the post' method. The election took place on Thursday 5 May 2005 between 7.00am and 10.00pm and counting began at 9.00am on Friday 6 May.  Local government elections were held on the same day as the general election.

All four of the 'main' political parties in Northern Ireland - Sinn Féin (SF), Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), and Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) - contested all 18 of the constituencies in the 2005 Westminster Election. In previous Westminster Elections the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) did not contest some of the constituencies so as not to split the Unionist vote; therefore it was not possible to gauge the absolute support of the two largest Unionist parties across the region. This election provided such an opportunity. There were changes to the boundaries of the constituencies between the Westminster election in 1992 and that in 1997. These changes resulted in one additional constituency and also affected most of the previous 17 constituencies. While comparisons between the results in 2005, 2001, and 1997 are possible, direct comparision with earlier elections are not.
