Description:

Here we are drawn to the central image of a heart, overlaid on the two prominent flags in Northern Ireland, the Union Jack and the Tri colour. In this piece, Jacqui tells the story of lovers from opposing communities who had to meet in secret during The Troubles. She reflects: “Even today, this is still an issue.”

Jacqui created this arpillera during workshops that took place as part of the associated activities during the exhibition Stitching and Unstitching the Troubles I and II, 2012/2013. In these workshops, women had the opportunity, over a series of weeks, to explore their memories of The Troubles; the 30 year period of ethno-political conflict in Northern Ireland, dating from the late 1960s until 1998, which resulted in the deaths of more than 3,000 people.
