Workshops:The Workhouse Through the Times
Description: ‘The Workhouse Through the Times’ project aims to provide additional engagement in, and awareness of, the Limavady Workhouse (1839 - 1930). Many families from the wider Binevenagh area have family members of previous generations who resided in the workhouse. From 1932-1998 the building was used as the local district hospital (Roe Valley Hospital). It is currently the home of Limavady Community Development Initiative (LCDI) and Limavady Volunteer Centre.

The commissioning organisation, Binevenagh and Coastal Lowlands Landscape Partnership (BCLLP) have framed this project within the vision to “Celebrate and connect local people with their unique landscape and heritage to build sustainable and resilient communities.”

Conflict Textiles involvement in this project is four-fold:
1)Initial workshops (September 2021), facilitated by Conflict Textiles team Roberta Bacic and Deborah Stockdale, engaged LCDI Hen Shed to create small textiles reflecting the current use of the former workhouse.
2)Deborah combined the different textile elements into a collective textile art piece The Workhouse Through The Times: Present Use 2022. It was unveiled at 5.30pm, Monday 7th March, in Limavady Community Development Initiative.
3)Phase 2 workshops with the LCDI Afterschool Club took place over four weeks in September/October 2022, facilitated by Roberta Bacic and Annie McKay. These workshops engaged children with the earlier history of the building - the Roe Valley Hospital era and the 19th century workhouse history - and culminated in a collective wall hanging Children connecting with the past through embroidery launched on 12 December 2022 at LCDI Afterschool Club..
4) The work produced will contribute to an exhibition which explores the history and use of the workhouse building.
For a more detailed description, see Project Overview in the documents section below.
Commissioned by: Binevenagh and Coastal Lowlands Landscape Partnership
Date(s): 20th September 2021 - 23rd February 2024
Venue: Limavady Community Development Initiative (LCDI)
Irish Green St, Limavady BT49 9EU
Curator: Conflict Textiles Team
Facilitator: Grace McAlister (Binevenagh and Coastal Lowlands Landscape Partnership Scheme)
Outcome: Working through the medium of textiles, the Conflict Textiles element of this project provided workshop participants with the space to reflect on the history and present use of Limavady Workhouse:
-'The Workhouse Through The Times: Present Use 2022', by Limavady Hen Shed, reflects how the Workhouse is now used in the 2020s.
-'Children connecting with the past through embroidery', by children from LCDI Afterschool Club, gave these children a sense of how children existed within the workhouse in the 19th century.
There was excellent engagement in the workshops by both groups.
