Exhibition and associated activities:War-Torn Children
Description: This Conflict Textiles exhibition of arpilleras, photographs and posters, commissioned by the Regional Cultural Centre, in collaboration with the Letterkenny Amnesty group, highlights the devastating impact of war on children, their families and communities. It was first exhibited at the Linen Hall Library, Belfast, 1st March - 15th April 2017. Since then it has been on display at the CB1 Gallery, Limerick (commissioned by Doras Luimní), 17th – 28th July at the Verbal Arts Centre, Derry/Londonderry, 3rd – 27th October, 2017. Exhibiting it in the Regional Cultural Centre marks the first stage of its journey in 2018.

The arpilleras are drawn from Conflict Textiles, the framed photographs from Fundació Ateneu Sant Roc (Catalonia) with a selection of smaller archival photos from a few collections and the posters from INNATE (Irish Network for Nonviolent Action Training and Education).

Partners to this initiative are CAIN (Conflict Archive on the INternet), at Ulster University, Linen Hall Library Belfast, Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny, Amnesty International Ireland and Letterkenny Amnesty group.

The exhibition launch takes place on Friday, 9th February, 2018, 12.30- 2pm.
Keynote address by Pina Attanasio, Amnesty International Ireland, music by Richard Gilpin, input by Ed Horgan, Naming the Children project and a guided tour by curator, Roberta Bacic.

Roberta will facilitate a "Hands on" workshop: Connecting with arpilleras, 2-3pm.

The exhibition programme is comprised of five events (two in February and three in March), all of which take place in the Regional Cultural Centre. (See 'War-Torn children exhibition programme' in documents section below).

Opening Hours:
Tues - Fri: 9:30am - 5:00pm
Sat 11.00am - 5.00pm
Commissioned by: Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal
Date(s): 8th February 2018 - 24th March 2018
Venue: Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal
Port Rd, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, Republic of Ireland
Curator: Roberta Bacic, assisted by Breege Doherty
Facilitator: Shaun Hannigan and Jeremy Howard, Regional Cultural Centre (RCC)
Outcome: The exhibition raised awareness, in a very powerful way, of the trauma and suffering of children and their families exposed to war. Its location, visible from an adjacent pathway, and in a space used for many other activities, made it accessible to many people. The RCC feel it was well attended.

Each associated activity provided insight into a different facet of war and its effects on children and adults alike; each event challenging and thought provoking. Many people who would have not normally come to Amnesty events joined us. The local group intends to collaborate with these new contacts to further raise awareness of the plight of refugees locally. Hopefully this will contribute to a positive spirit of welcome for future refugees to the county, and a willingness to work to relieve their suffering in our own communities and beyond. For us, as a local AMNESTY group, the process was hugely bonding and increased our visibility in a very positive manner.
